Descriptive Essay About Friendship - 2251 Words

January 27th, 1923. It’s cold here in the Windy City. I stand outside the Green Mill, a speakeasy, and take a moment to listen to the smooth jazz playing. It isn’t long before my legs start to numb and my teeth chatter. I walk up to the door. A slot slides open in the door and a pair of emotionless eyes meet mine. â€Å"Password.† A gruff voice behind the door barks. â€Å"Swordfish.† I reply. The door opens and I’m greeted with the rest of the body that the voice belongs to. â€Å"Josephine Traver. Well, I hadn’t seen you ‘round here in a long time,† He looks me up and down â€Å"you’re lookin’ nice.† Finally I am able to put a name to this familiar face, Buddy. This man has murdered- well, has hired people to murder- his successful competitors and has escaped from the law many times. â€Å"I hate that I left too. I am here to ask for your forgiveness, to ask for my job back.† He takes a long time to answer. He studies me. I start to shake. â€Å"You can have your job back, but only on one condition. You will work for me, and only me, for as long as I need you.† I take a moment to consider this. Al Capone is a dangerous man. Saying yes would be signing my life away. But money is tight and I don’t have any other options. â€Å"Fine. Whatever you say boss.† He smiles and chuckles. â€Å"Welcome back.† Months go by and it is now spring. Facing Reality in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee...

The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams was a confusing, astounding, and wonderful play that takes an in depth look at the complex relationships that develop between members of a family and then presents them for the audiences dissection. How did the characters in the play interact? What were the independent and dependent relationships between the characters? Perhaps most important, how did they cope with one another? That seemed to be the key question when looking at The Glass Menagerie. Each character had their own method for dealing with the others and reality, primarily by not truly dealing with them and it. Amanda, the father, Laura, Tom, and even Jim, each character in this story had their own way of escaping reality;†¦show more content†¦Amandas husband, and Tom and Lauras father, had a rather simple method of escapism in this play. He simply escaped. Never physically present in The Glass Menagerie (Williams 389), the reason for his departure was unclear and c an only lead to conjecture on the part of the reader or watcher. Instead a far greater impact seemed to be felt from his very absence than his presence. As a character, his physical escape cannot truly be commented on except perhaps to say that his escape was the only true escape in the play. He was the only character that the audience was never shown the intrusion of reality into his fantasy and that seems significant. The reality of his absence could not be ignored and his physical escape was true. Lauras methods of escapism were perhaps a little more typical. While she did dwell in thoughts of the past and future as her mother did, she more frequently used objects to take her away from reality. To avoid a confrontation with her mother about business college, Laura physically and mentally escaped into the park (Williams 392). Laura withdrew into her world of glass figurines and music (Williams 399), and until her mother and Jim forced her to see beyond her physical being, L aura hid behind her physical impairment (Williams 392). The Ipl Was Well Marketed Free Essays

The IPL was well marketed Not so humble origins: In 2008 the Board of Control for Cricket India, initiated the Indian Premier League (IPL) -a professional league for Twenty20 cricket format competition. But even before its start the IPL was in the news for its altercation between the Indian Cricket League (ICL) started by Subhash Chandra of Zee Telefilms Ltd. The BCCI used many tactics (including threatening players who joined ICL that they would not be picked up for national team, raising prize money, inviting celebrities†¦ to eventually crush the ICL format that had started almost a year before. We will write a custom essay sample on The Ipl Was Well Marketed or any similar topic only for you Order Now The constant confrontations between ICL and IPL were perennially in the top news in all the news channels. This along with the fact that it was cricket made sure that the Indian viewer was hooked. The IPL is currently contested by 10 teams consisting of players from around the world. Team Name| City| Owner(s)| Mumbai Indians| Mumbai| Mukesh Ambani (Owners of Reliance Industries)| Royal Challengers Bangalore| Bengaluru| Vijay Mallya (UB Group)| Hyderabad Deccan Chargers| Hyderabad| T. Venkatram Reddy (Deccan Chronicle) group| Chennai Super Kings| Chennai| India Cements| Delhi Daredevils| New Delhi| GMR Group| Kings XI Punjab| Mohali| Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, Dabur, Apeejay Surendera Group| Kolkata Knight Riders| Kolkata| Red Chillies Entertainment| Rajasthan Royals| Jaipur| Emerging Media (Lachlan Murdoch), Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra| Pune Warriors India| Pune| Subrato Roy Sahara| Kochi Tuskers Kerala| Kochi| Kochi Cricket Private Ltd| The Marketing Cocktail: IPL marketing can be a lesson that no publicity is bad publicity. It was Integrated Marketing communication at its best, no channel no mode of communication was left: TV, newspaper, internet, mobiles, every communication was uniform in promoting IPL during its launch and its subsequent seasons. Following is what IPL did right and did differently: 1. The Twenty20 Format It was new, innovative and short (2. 5 hour). What was initially being thought of as a big gamble eventually paid out and many who thought it almost blasphemous to change the format of the â€Å"gentleman’s game† were finally forced to embrace the new format . It changed the feeling of cricket itself, made it fast paced, exciting and appealing. 2. Cricket + Entertainment= great combination There is no doubt that cricket is synonymous with entertainment when it comes to sports, however the IPL form of entertainment brought with it new elements such as Cheerleaders, star studded opening ceremony, loud party music between shots†¦ that made it lot more than just sports. IPL became synonymous with Glitz and glamour both on and off field, matches were even screened in movie halls 3. Celebrities Apart from the celebrity players, the owners and even the brand ambassadors of various teams were flamboyant and contributed to the secondary associations of IPL. There was no dearth of big names as one after the other all famous personalities were roped in to represent the teams. These include Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Shilpa Shetty, Elizabeth Hurley, Abhishesk Bacchan, Rahul Bose, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Saina Nehwal, Farah Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Daler Mehendi, Ila Arun, Juhi Chawla, Karan Johar, Arjun Rampal, Akshay Kumar. . IPL Player Auction Never in history of Indian television had such numbers been rolled out for public viewing. The auction format, wherein players were to be â€Å"auctioned† had considerable shock value for Indian viewers, but it also gave an indication of the big money that was involved in cricket and specially IPL. There was some negative publicity as well like when Saurav Ganguly was not sold off in the auction, but it just added to the ongoing publicity of IPL. Until 2010, IPL also had the Icon Player concept wherein one player in each team earned 15% more than the next highest player in the team. This concept was added as there were some players who if played in some other team would have caused huge disappointment to their fans, like if Sachin Tendulkar played for some other team than Mumbai Indians it wold crush the Mumbai fans. But this was later n removed as it was considered not fair to the icon players. 5. Packaging of the event * In 2010, Google (the company which runs You Tube) wanting to grow the online video market in India, knew that it had to try to grab a share of the TV eyeballs and therefore IPL became the first sporting event ever to be broadcast live on YouTube in association with Indiatimes. * Players from all over the world played alongside Indian players and BCCI made sure that the event got the international recognition and provided the financial backing it needed. The television rights for IPL are with Sony Entertainment television network and World Sport Group (Singapore), they broadcasted the matches the auction etc well. * The media hype was maintained throughout and there were a number of creative ads which popularized the promo of IPL every season. The ads covered different segments of people and had a tinge of humor but they all conveyed the single thought of cricket entertainment to all segments. * Complete use of social media: YouTube, twitter, FaceBook, Wikiped ia and online page. Conclusion: Purists may say that IPL is not cricket, and they may be right. For IPL marketed as the ‘Entertainment ka Baap’ is not just cricket but glamour, fun, sports and experience all rolled into one and for once the promise was delivered. Concept paper free essay sample

A Concept Paper is about the in-depth analysis regarding an intangible thought, theory, or idea. The goal of writing a concept paper is to explain a particular idea to the audience or readers objectively. Whenever an idea has to be explained, a concept paper is needed. If the audience has no knowledge about the topic, your job should inform them. If your audience has some knowledge, your job is to add new things or new idea about the topic. A concept paper is prepared as a prelude to a full paper. The full paper may be a thesis, a program, a project, or anything that will require a longer time to prepare. It is expected that the concept paper should consist only of 1 or 2 pages. Or if you want to clear up some matters, it can go up to 5 pages. The concept paper may also be used as an instructional tool that may have developed as a result of extensive research, committee input and/or as a result of the outcome of a current project. Reverse osmosis, electrochemical methods, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, flotation, and membrane processes are some of he techniques that were discovered (Park et al. , 2010). Unfortunately, these techniques have some limitations. They cannot completely remove the metals. They also require high energy and reagents and they generate waste products such as toxic sludge which ARQ Eire disposal. In addition, these methods are restricted when used for the decontamination of marine systems with heavy metals in a low concentration range (Viral and Volleys, 2000).As a result of these inadequacies and inefficiencies, researchers have sought alternative ways of removing toxic heavy metals from aquatic systems. It was in the 1 asss when the researchers, in the field of environmental biotechnology, discovered a new and efficient method for heavy metal removal- absorption. Absorption is defined as the capability of biological materials to accumulate heavy metals from aquatic systems through metabolically physiochemical pathways Of uptake (Ally et al. , 2003). The mechanism of absorption is complex. It mainly works through ion exchange, collation, adsorption by physical forces, and entrapment of metals in spaces of the structural polysaccharide network and in interlibrary and interlibrary capillaries (Ally et al. 2003). The major advantages of this technology over the conventional ones include not only its affordability and availability but also its high efficiency- the minimization of chemical and biological sludge, the removal of heavy metals at low concentrations, and the recovery of metal following adsorption (Volleys, 2007).In the process of absorption, a biological material is regarded as the absorbent. Absorbents, which contain metal-sequestering properties, can come from industrial wastes, organisms that are easily available in large amounts in nature, and organisms of quick growth (Viral and Volleys 2000). They can be classified into two, the living organisms and the non-living biological materials. Living organisms include bacteria such as the gram- negative, gram-positive and controversial; fungi such as molds, mushrooms and yeasts; and algae such as the seaweeds, micro-algae and macro-algae (Park et al. 2010). On the other hand, non-living biological materials include industrial wastes such as waste sludge and mill residues; agricultural wastes such as the fruit and vegetable derivatives; and natural residues such as saw dust, tree barks, and weeds (Park et al. , 2010).. Seaweeds offer advantages for sorption mainly because of their structure- the presence of carboxylic and sulfates in their polysaccharides (Ally et al. , 2003). In fact, some species of seaweed evaluated by different researchers have indicated impressive absorption of metals (Hand and Volley, 1 999; Volleys et al. , 1999; Volleys and Holon, 19995; Figural et al. , 2000). Drooled et al. (1996) studied the ability of three species of seaweed namely Caecilian maxima, Lessoning fallacies and Derailleur potatoes and found out that they can remove copper, nickel, zinc, lead and cadmium in aqueous solution. Grampus awed was also confirmed by Volleys et al. (1999) to remove cadmium and copper from aquatic systems. The research team stated that the alginate in the cell wall is the one responsible for the metal sorption of the seaweed. It has also been demonstrated by Viral and Volleys (2000) that fungi can be used as absorbents for heavy metals since they are composed of a wide range of chemical groups that can attract and sequester the metals in biomass. Their cell walls are composed of structural polysaccharides, proteins and lipids that offer metal-binding functional groups (Ally et al. , 2003). In the study of Stock et al. 2006), dry biomass of three fungi species namely Carious campsites, Amanita muscular and Tetrameter g Ibos were tested for their absorption capabilities and results revealed that these fungi can remove copper, aluminum and antimony from aqueous solutions. According to Paragon et al. (2007), the cell surface of bacteria carries a net negative charge due to the presence of carbonyl, amine, hydroxyl, phosphate and skillfully groups and because of this property bacteria can attract and adsorb significant quantities of positively charged heavy metals. And so, cetera can also be used as absorbent. In fact, according to the study conducted by Lung et al. (2001) entitled Absorption of heavy metals by bacteria isolated from activated sludge, both gram-positive (Bacillus) and gram-negative (Pseudonymous) bacteria have the capacity to remove copper, nickel and lead. Waste materials, such as agricultural wastes, natural wastes, and the by- products from large-scale industrial operations, were also given extensive attention.Dried activated waste sludge from a sewage treatment plant can remove cadmium, copper and zinc according to Hamming et al. (2003), olive ill residues can remove copper according to Poignantly et al. (2002), and bossily can remove zinc according to Drooled et al. (1996). Agricultural wastes such as the Nanas commons peel, Paprika specious pods and Sodium guava peel, as investigated by Off et al. (2011 can adsorb cadmium. Also, natural wastes such as bark from Eucalyptus globules Labial and Pinups radiate have been found out to accumulate copper and zinc (Ruffian and Mulligan, 201 1).Feasibility studies have established that absorptive processes using non-living biomass are more effective than the absorptive processes that use vying microorganisms. This is due to the fact that living microorganisms require nutrient supply and complicated fabricator systems (Park et al. , 2010). In addition to that, due to the toxicity of the pollutants being extracted and other unsuitable environmental factors such as the temperature and the acidity of the system being treated, maintenance of a healthy population of microorganisms becomes difficult (Park et al. 2010). For these reasons, some prefer the use of non-living biomass as absorbents. However, there are a lot of attributes of living microorganisms which remain unexploited and these attributes are all valuable of extra attention since they may be of great use for specific applications (Park et al. , 2010). In fact, A. Mali mentioned that when some non-living absorptive metal removal is not possible, growing metal resistant cells can be applied to water systems. These cells can ensure better removal due to a combination of precipitation, absorption, and continuous uptake of metals after physical adsorption (Mali, 2004). With the economic advantages and the wide knowledge accumulated about the absorption technology, some new absorbents are currently promoted for immemorial exploitation (Viral and Volleys, 2000). However, there are no limits to expanding our knowledge about the science of absorption. We still need to acquire deeper understanding and provide accurate explanations of the phenomenon in order to utilize this technology to its maximum efficiency.

Clockworks Orange Essays - Criminology, A Clockwork Orange, Films

Clockworks Orange In the 1960's our developing world faces many of it's impurities. The youth of this nation fight for equal right, equality of the races and freedom of speech. But not all the protests are legal. Many people are guilty of treason and must be punished but with an over crowded prison system were will these political prisoners be sent. The common criminals are flooding the system with there petty robbers, assaults and murders. We need to deal with the common criminal before we can deal with the political. The novel The Clockwork Orange written by Anthony Burgess depicts the life of a child of the night (Alex). Him and his droogs (friends) see life as something worthless as they rape, assault and murder their way though their teenage-hood. To help cure this problem the government comes up with a new way a deal with criminals. This method included the relation between crime and physical pain. The method is first used on Alex when he was arrested. It works and he is released into society a violence free man. In the end Alex grows out of the treatment and goes back on a crime spree. He continues this until he grows out of teenage hood. The novel itself is well written, though it is a hard read. It contains over 200 Russian words that the reader must decipher themselves due to the fact that Anthony Burgess will not allow a glossary in any of his printings. The novel which is narrated by the man character pulls you into his life and shows the reader what goes through the mind of the criminally insane. The flow of the novel is easy to follow with little confusion on what is in each section. Many insights can be derived from this book and it can be used to support many different topics. A well rounded book that gives the reader wanting more. The power of youth is growing in the 60's. Teenager fight for their rights but when they have nothing more to fight for they will need something else to do. Most teens when bored turn to drug and crime as a source of pleasure. To deal with this me must stop it by sending the youth to correctional facilities. When these don't work adult punishments must be given. But what if we could trace back into the mind and find why we commit crimes. The Clockworks Orange first tries to help us understand why one commits a crime. No one will ever understand why someone would want to kills or rape or assault anyone. There may never be an answer for it. Some people like the feeling most guess. With this in mind there must be a way to counteract this good feeling. Once we understand why we must find a way to treat the criminals. Many governments, monarchy and dictatorships have tried to deal with this problem. The government within the novel tries to associated physical pain to the idea of violence. Some scientists believe the reason one turns to violence is because it makes the individual feel good, that it satisfies a hungry (even sexually needs). This method works in te novel but has side effects just like all other methods. It leaves the individual helpless in all threatening situations. The method of criminal control fails just like many that have in real life. The way we deal with criminals hasn't changed much in the past 50 years. Prisons are over crowded and repeat offenders are very common. To deal with the common criminal will first take an understanding of why they commit crimes then we must learn how to deal with them. Once we understand the common thief or the average robber will we be able to deal with the criminal masterminds,

Is it easy to equate that scandals whether sex related, or politically incorrect stories translates into sales. However, most of these books in past histories have gained the attention of the Supreme Courts. In the Supreme Court case, A Book Named John Cleland ¡Ã‚ ¯s  ¡Ã‚ °Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure ¡ v. Massachussets of 1966, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court affirmed the lower court decisions for the novel  ¡Ã‚ °Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure ¡ as obscene. The lower court had noted that the "social importance"p.426 element of the Roth test, which did not require that a book "must be unqualifiedly worthless before it can be deemed obscene." However, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the decisions of the lower courts, emphasizing that under Roth, material could not be deemed obscene unless it was "utterly without redeeming social value".English: Marcus Perrin Knowlton, Chief Justice of ...Thus, according to Judge Brennan and Judge Fortas, the following requirements are necessary in order to constitute a book as being obscene: it must be established that (a) the dominant theme of the material taken as a whole appeals to a prurient interest in sex; (b) the material is patently offensive because it affronts contemporary community standards relating to the description or representation of sexual matters; and (c) the material is utterly without redeeming social value. ...The following statement falls under article 354 U.S 476 of Roth v. U.S., and this pretty much re-enforces the present idea of social morality and pornography control in the media. Yet it is needless to say that even though laws of pornography were established in previous times to prevent immorality in society, we can still find many books,

Brief Overview of Lee Alexander McQueen Lee Alexander McQueen was considered one of the most inspiring and creative fashion designers of his time. He was born on March 17, 1969 in Lewisham, London. His birthplace was strategically contributory to being closely immersed in the fashion industry through the influence of great designers within his realm. In the foreword of the book written about him by Watt, Daphne Guinness described McQueen as a friend who has been allegedly referred as â€Å"the fashion world’s darling, its rebel and pioneer† . Other adjectives that described McQueen included: designer, architect, artisan, inspired fantasist, defiant, obsessive, among others. Another author, described McQueen as: misogynist, genius, angel and devil, romantic, rude, foulmouthed, influential, innovative, brat, and was acknowledged to allegedly call himself â€Å"a big fat queer†. What was controversial in McQueen’s life was that in the midst of his success as a fashion designer, he opted to apparently end his life on February 11, 2010, at the age of 40 through suicide just after the death of his mother. His remarkable contribution to the fashion industry could have been summed by Slone who indicated that â€Å"Alexander McQueen was a lauded British fashion designer who incorporated prominent images of nature into his designs, from gazelle horned jackets to bird-of-prey ball gowns. His work was both critically acclaimed and massively popular, and his designs are works of art in themselves, worthy of further examination†.
